KIPO Kotagede

2/27/2014 Posted by Unknown No comments
Kipo, the traditional snack of Kotagede, Yogyakarta. This is a traditional unique snack which is so tiny sized, green and sweet. The size small and it's oval. It's as big as your thumb but the taste is very nice.

Beside it's good taste and tiny shape, kipo has unique history of its name. Term "Kipo" is an acronym of  question expression in Javanese "Iki opo?" which means "What is this?". Previously, when the snack is made for the very first time, people always asked "iki opo?' and finally, that question is taken for the name of the snack, "iki opo" became "kipo".
The process of making kipo is very simple. The compositions are the mix of ketan flour colored green by pandan & suji leaves, with palm sugar and coconut for the filling. Kipo is baked in pan made from clay without oil and it's wrapped with leaves of banana tree. That is so simple and traditional.

For you who visit Kotagede for enjoying view of historical building or buying silver, you have to try kipo. The price is very very cheap, only 1400 rupiah for 1 package, containing 5 kipos. You can find it the street to west  from market, and you can also see how to make it with very friendly women (the kipo maker is ussualy women) in her kitchen.
